Barcelos (2010, 2008, 2006, 2003), Silva (2010, 2007) Freudenberger e Rottava
(2004), Kudiess (2004), Pajares (1992), dentre outros. Para tratar de gêneros
textuais, nos reportamos a Bakhtin (2000), Bazerman (2005, 2006), Bronckart
(1999), Dolz e Schnewuly (2004), Miller (1984), Swales (1990).
contexto da pesquisa é a Universidade do Estado do Rio Grande do Norte – UERN,
com alunos informantes do sexto e do oitavo períodos do curso Letras/Língua
Inglesa, totalizando quinze participantes.
conceituam gênero numa perspectiva funcional, social e interacional, no entanto,

Abstract:
We know that the study of beliefs is recent in Brazil and it is in its expansion phase.
Because of that, we understand that it is important to present perspectives of
investigation in that field and to follow the scholars‟ orientations to accomplish
researches about beliefs of specific aspects of the teaching-learning of languages. In
this work, we aimed to describe, analyze and discuss the students-teachers‟ beliefs
of Letras about the use of the textual genres in the teaching of the English language.
That way, this work is orientated by the themes of Beliefs and of Textual Genres. To
discuss about the beliefs, we mention Barcelos (2010, 2008, 2006, 2003),
Freudenberger and Rottava (2004), Kudiess (2004), Pajares (1992), among others.
To discuss the Textual Genres, we point out Bakhtin (2000), Bazerman (2005, 2006),
Bronckart (1999), Dolz and Schnewuly (2004), Miller (1984), Swales (1990). It is a
descriptive and interpretativist research, whose data were analyzed qualiquantitatively. As instruments, we used a questionnaire with open and closed
questions, an inventory and an interview. The context of the research is the
University of the State of Rio Grande do Norte (UERN), with informant students of the
sixth and of the eighth semesters totalizing fifteen participants. The results reveal that
some of the students consider genres as a social-communicative action, which is
according to some theories. Yet, they recognize the importance of relating genre and
teaching, under that perspective. We noticed they have had knowledge of some
theories that conceptualize genre in a functional, social and interacional perception,
however, they present the following gaps: (1) the emphasis given to the written
genres in detriment of the orals; (2) the non discernment of what is genre, support or
medium; (4) difficulty in understanding text in a wide perspective; (3) difficulty of still
defining and of distinguishing some genres. The results present beliefs in changing,
that is, beliefs that already differ from some traditional conceptions, but they also
reveal aspects that need to be emphasized. Therefore, in spite of some progresses,
the moment is not still satisfactory for the English teaching-learning based on the
textual genres. That occurs because the teachers in education do not have adhered
to beliefs relating these aspects that, in our vision, are crucial to the teaching with
textual genres.
