Abstract:
From the reading and analysis of the works of the Dutch philosopher Benedictus de Spinoza (1632-1677), Theological-PoliticalTreatise, Political Treatise and Ethics, we will develop the concept of superstition, explaining its political pitfalls and pointing out the mechanisms that the sovereign uses for the maintenance of power through the control and manipulation of the people. In the Theological-Political Treatise Spinoza describes the 17th century Netherlands as a setting of political and economic disputes disguised as religious conflicts. It is precisely this fierce state of mind that leads Spinoza to write the Theological-Political Treatise. In this context, Spinoza perceives danger when the individual is easily affected by fear - or the unstable sadness that arises from the idea of a future or past event, whose realization is not sure -; and by hope - or the unstable joy arising from the idea of a future or past event, whose realization is somewhat doubtful. Fear and hope are two fundamental affects in politically manipulating the masses, for it causes superstition which is arises from fear of inconsistent sadness and the hope of inconsistent joy. Because we are incapable of knowing our own power, reason submits to the reveries of the imagination and the ignorance of the true causes. Spinoza asserts that these two affections are natural of the human being and it is impossible not to be taken by them, consequently the sovereign plays with these two weapons with ease. The importance of this essay lies in pondering the necessity of elucidation of the true causes, that is, the knowledge of God or God or Nature, so that we may not be carried away by the superstition and affections that originate and feed it. For a state founded on religious fundamentalism and on the belief of an anthropomorphic God is subject to ignorance and therefore to the woes of the intellectual power of men, placing them further away from the knowledge of causes, that is, from God or the absolutely infinite substance. Keywords: Superstition. Fear. Hope. Spinoza.
