Abstract:
Distance Learning Programs are practical options to decentralize and expand formal University education for English as Second Language (ESL) teachers in Brazil. However, one challenge regarding Virtual Learning Environments (VLE) remains: the use of technological resources to encourage synchronous oral interactions between students and tutors. In order to investigate this issue, this work collected data from a group of English Language Licentiate students in a distance education program offered by Instituto Universidade Virtual (UFC Virtual), in the city of Quixadá, Ceará. One of the main goals was to understand the challenges and find possible solutions to develop the speaking skill in this context. It was also necessary to verify if the students were satisfied with the VLE Solar as a means of practicing speaking. This research applied the following procedures: 1) a participant observation and a description of oral tasks required at Solar during the third term’s English Language – Oral Production and Comprehension course, in the first semester of the year 2018; 2) a participant observation and a report from two face-to-face classes; 3) a semi-structured questionnaire survey, which was answered by ten students. The first stage analysis showed that the oral tasks asked the students to record two audio files, one individual and another in pairs. The majority of the learners affirmed that they have read written texts in English pretending to be chatting. In a second moment, the students participated in two face-to-face classes on Mach 22 nd and April 9 th 2018, at the UFC Virtual’s center in Quixadá. They practiced conversation skills and received instant tutor’s feedback. Finally, ten students replied the survey about the learning process of the speaking skill in distance education. The majority of them considered that the amount of faceto-face lessons was insufficient to develop English conversations spontaneously. The results suggest that the students need more frequent synchronous tutoring, whether they are web conferenced or through other instant media, to overcome the problems during oral interactions. Key-words: Distance Education. English Language Learning. Speaking Skill.
