ANÁLISE MULTIMODAL DAS DEFINIÇÕES IMAGÉTICAS E DE SUA RELAÇÃO
COM O TEXTO VERBAL NA MICROESTRUTURA DO DICIONÁRIO VISUAL

RESUMO Devido aos avanços tecnológicos ocorridos nas últimas décadas, os textos modificaram-se passando a aliar vários códigos, além do verbal, em sua composição. Esta integração de diferentes recursos semióticos, que juntos “co-operam” na promoção de significados em uma interação comunicativa, define a multimodalidade, característica cada vez mais presente nos dicionários que evoluíram, especialmente, quanto à incorporação das imagens. A partir dessas considerações, este trabalho de caráter descritivo-qualitativo tem como objetivo analisar as definições imagéticas na microestrutura multimodal do dicionário visual Merriam-Webster’s Compact Visual Dictionary (2010). Através da análise de doze verbetes – dos quais foram ressaltadas as microestruturas – extraídos dos doze campos temáticos que formam o referido dicionário, foram investigados os significados socialmente fundados ligados ao posicionamento das imagens e as relações que se realizam na interface com as definições verbais das entradas e subentradas principais. Para a análise da articulação multimodal das imagens na composição microestrutural foram tomados como base as categorias da metafunção composicional sustentadas por Kress e van Leeuwen (2006) e explicitadas na Gramática do Design Visual. Para a análise dos tipos de relações que se realizam na interface entre as definições imagéticas e textuais nas microestruturas selecionadas foram tomados como base as categorias lógicosemânticas de expansão delineadas por Martinec e Salway (2005). Os resultados da análise dos dados apontam que o modo de leitura convencionado na cultura ocidental, aliado à saliência, determina as imagens posicionadas à esquerda, no topo e na base das microestruturas, como os comentários semântico-visuais principais. A proeminência dessas imagens em tamanho e em cores auxilia a expressar características específicas relativas ao conteúdo do lema. Na interface entre imagens e textos das entradas e subentradas foi verificado que a principal relação lógicosemântica de expansão é a elaboração no nível de exemplificação já que ocorre em todas as amostras analisadas. Os textos das entradas e subentradas tendem a elaborar as imagens de forma generalizada. Desta forma, cabe às imagens expressar características específicas relativas ao conteúdo delimitado pela palavra-entrada. Palavras-chave: Metalexicografia. Dicionário Visual. Multimodalidade. Abstract:
ABSTRACT Due to technological advances that happened in the past decades, the texts have changed and started to combine several codes in addition to verbal. This integration of different semiotic resources that together co-operate in the promotion of meaning in a communicative interaction defines multimodality, a feature increasingly present in the dictionaries that have evolved concerning the incorporation of images. Considering that, this paper, which can be categorized as a descriptive and qualitative research, aims to analyze the imagery mode in the multimodal microstructure of the Merriam-Webster's Compact Visual Dictionary (2010). By analyzing twelve entries – of which we will highlight the microstructures – extracted from the twelve thematic fields that forms the dictionary we will investigate the social meanings attached to the positioning of the images and the relation performed between the verbal definitions of the main entries and subentries. As for the analysis of images’ multimodal articulation in the microstructural arrangement, it is based on Kress and Van Leeuwen’s (2006) compositional metafunction’s categories explained in the Grammar of Visual Design. As for the analysis of relationships’ types that take place at the interface between imagery and written definitions, it is based on Martinec and Salway’s (2005) logico-semantic expansion’s categories. The results of data analysis indicate that the reading scheme in Western culture combined with the salience determines the images positioned to the left, at the top and at the bottom of the microstructures as the main semantic-visual definitions. The prominence of these images in size and color helps to express specific characteristics related to the content of the entry. At the interface between images and texts of the entries and subentries was verified that the main logico-semantic relation of expansion is the elaboration at the level of exemplification as it occurs in all samples analyzed. The texts of the entries and subentries tend to elaborate the images in a generalized manner. Thus, the images express specific characteristics related to the content enclosed by the word-entry.
