ABSTRACT
This research’s objective is to understand how the undergraduate courses on PE and
Mathematics in IFCE – Canindé Campus – contribute on reinforcing the debate around the
ethnic-racial issue, taking into account the teacher’s academic education. As such, it aims to
characterize both institutional and pedagogical strategies which favor the aforementioned
debate on the subject in the undergraduate courses, as well as getting to know the teachers’
perceptions on the contribution of their conceptions and practices on the theme, which concur
towards the promotion of racial equality. Also analyzed are the representations that the
undergrad students have on the racial issue and its relationship with the processes of initial
formation to teaching. The study is based in a critical-historical vision on racism and its
repercussions on the Brazilian society and how Education may be a proper space for the
promotion of affirmative actions and the promulgation of both anti-racist ideas and attitudes
on society. In order to achieve this, this essay is based on Guimarães (2012), Nascimento
(2003), Gomes (2001, 2011, 2017), Almeida (2017), Fonseca (2009), Monteiro e Pimenta
(2013), Inbernón (2011), Alves (2011), Garcia (2014), Tardiff (2014), Scheibe (2012), among
others. Along this research, institutional documents, such as the 2014-2018’s development
plan, pedagogical projects on the undergraduate courses and statutes on the Center for Afro-
Brazilian and Indigenous Studies were analyzed. With the intent of understanding how the
ethnic-racial issue is expressed in the formative route of these undergrads, interviews were
made with both teachers and students. After 15 years of the publication of Law 10.639/03,
which represents a mark in the history of fights for the promotion of racial equality on Brazil,
the understating of the theme can still be perceived in the formation of new teachers and, also,
on the continuous formation. It can be understood that the ethnic-racial issue is still
overlooked as a transversal theme and the reflection on racism and its consequences in the
school environment is still far from the daily life of both teachers and students.
