A MATERNIDADE SIMBÓLICA NA RELIGIÃO AFRO-BRASILEIRA: aspectos socioculturais da mãe-de-santo na Umbanda em Fortaleza-Ceará

RESUMO
Esta tese trata da maternidade simbólica exercida pelas mães-de-santo na Umbanda em Fortaleza e Região Metropolitana. Tem como objetivos construir a memória histórica do Espiritismo de Umbanda no Ceará por intermédio da narrativa dos seus adeptos, considerando o contexto e as transformações por que essa religião passou e o entrecruzamento com os projetos religiosos das mães-de-santo; interpretar as teias de significado que as sacerdotisas atribuem à maternidade espiritual perpassada de simbolismos, na busca de saber o que é ser mãe-de-santo em seus aspectos socioculturais. A pesquisa é de cunho qualitativo, mediante o uso do método da história oral, tendo como instrumentos de coleta de dados a entrevista e a observação participante. Foram colhidos depoimentos orais na comunidade de terreiros entre os anos de 2004 e 2009, junto a mães, pais e filhos e filhas-de-santo. O estudo apresenta as mães-de-santo como guardiãs de uma tradição que se renova na dinâmica contemporânea. No campo religioso, o feminino e a maternidade das sacerdotisas se constituem a partir das referências simbólicas dos orixás e das entidades espirituais que lhes guiam. Por meio deste simbolismo, constroem-se novos espaços de luta contra a opressão feminina, transgressão aos poderes e discursos oficiais que circunscrevem os domínios da mulher. A maternidade está envolta por uma teia de complexidade tecida pelo imaginário social presente na nossa cultura, cujos símbolos trazem a representação da bondade, do cuidado e da proteção. As práticas religiosas dessas mães-de-santo revelam contradições, conflitos e ambigüidades que demarcam relações de poder. Possuem uma visão de mundo mítica, apresentam soluções e explicações do universo mítico e têm soluções e explicações no mundo “real” ao justificar suas condutas. A dimensão sociocultural na maternidade simbólica das mães-de-santo não pode ser reduzida às formulações racionais, acreditando que elas só protegem e cuidam. Mas vão além, convivem com o incerto, o que provoca nelas o poder de criar e reinventar suas práticas na vida cotidiana.

ABSTRACT
This research talks about symbolic maternity in the religious practice observed envolving the sorceress work in metropolitan region in Fortaleza. It intends to understand the construction of the symbolic maternity. This way it also reconstruct the historic memory of Spiritism of Umbanda in Ceará. The research is based on their follower narratives. It considers the context and the religious changes and the relations to the religious projects of the sorceresses. It aproaches the spiritual maternity sense of the female priests in order to understand the social cultural aspects of the sorceress definition. It is a qualitative research based on a oral history method. The collection technique is interviews and field research observations. It were collected oral declarations in Umbanda universe from 2004 to 2009. The study presents the tradition renovation realized by the sorceresses in the modern society. In the religious field the female conception is based on the symbolic references of their entities ordenation. By this symbolism is observed the oposition against the oficial female domination. It is observed a complex meaning net whose symbols call atentions to the protection, goodness and cares meanings. The religious practices project the power relations. They present the mystic world view. Their behavior justifies solutions and explanations of the reality. It is not possible to reduce the sociocultural dimension of the symbolic maternity to the racional formulations of the sorceressses. It is not possible to believe that they just protect and care their sons. Besides they believe they can create and reinvent the daily practices.
