No ar, ele é transportado e depositado globalmente.
Abstract:
ABSTRACT The mercury is the only liquid metal at standard conditions of temperature and pressure. It exists in the environment through the result of the natural process and the human activities. It also, evaporates easily and can remain in the atmosphere for up to a year. In the air, it is transported and deposited globaly. The mercury is highly toxic, because it can be fatal if inhaled and harmful if absorbed through the skin. In the history, the mercury had relevance for the chemistry. There are reports from the ancient times which show that this element could be obtained from cinnabar, HgS and it was also present in important discoveries and chemical transformations as the experiments with HgO and the discovery of oxygen done by Karl Wilhelm Scheele (1742-1786) and Joseph Priestley (1733-1804). This study is a bibliographic review on the sources of mercury in the environment, the mechanism of dispersion and accumulation, the preventive measures in order to mitigate the exposure to the population, the main uses and applications of this metal which include its use in odontological amalgams, fluorescent lamps, in industrial processes and gold extraction activities. Because it is a highly toxic element, the improper disposal and contamination of effluent and soils by mercury cause issues to the populations that make use of the resources available in the contaminated region. This work was conducted through a literature search based on Gil. The literature search was held in the New Chemistry databases and SBQ, published in the period of 1996 to 2014. 9 were used national and international articles 1, divided in toxicology, thematic books on general characteristics, sources, uses, dispersal mechanism and accumulation of mercury and a technical guide on the management of mercury Waste in health services, in Portuguese language, published in the period of 1991 to 2013. There is a small approach on the technical guide " Gerenciamento dos Resíduos de Mercúrio nos Serviços de Saúde ", which aims to assist in the solution of the problems detected in relation to the management of products containing mercury, providing, to the managers of the health and of the environment, access to information about the management of metallic mercury and its residues, in health services. This guide presents also, alternatives to your management and the use of the methodology of cleaner production and introduction to new technologies, important tools to the elimination, mitigation, treatment and final disposal of mercury waste. Keywords: Mercury, Environment, Human health, Waste.
