Abstract:
In this study, Practice as a Curricular Component (PCC) is understood as a form of pedagogical practice developed during initial teacher education, distinct from the supervised internship. It is grounded in the idea that theory and practice should not be separated, but rather experienced as an integrated and meaningful whole. According to the current legislation, established by Resolution CNE/CP No. 4/2024, the 400 hours previously allocated to PCC have been replaced by 320 hours of Academic Extension Activities (AAE), organized as practices linked to curricular components. However, when these practices are carried out without a strong connection to theoretical reflection, they move away from earlier principles that defined PCC as a form of praxisone that necessarily brings together theory and practice. In its original conception, PCC was designed as a mandatory element that would allow future teachers to expand their experiences and engage more deeply with the act of teaching, making it a fundamental part of their professional preparation. This discussion is closely related to the objectives of this thesis. The main goal is to understand how professors in the Physics teacher education program at IFCE perceive and make sense of PCC, considering both what they know and what they do in their teaching practice. To guide this investigation, three specific objectives were outlined: (a) to examine how PCC is presented in the Pedagogical Course Project of the program; (b) to explore how the faculty’s initial and continuing education relates to their understanding of PCC; and (c) to discuss the role of PCC in Physics teacher education, based on how knowledge and practice are conceived and recognized by the professors. The theoretical reflections developed here are informed by authors who have contributed to discussions on PCC, pedagogical practice, teacher knowledge, and teacher education. These perspectives help frame PCC as a space where different types of knowledge and experiences come together, reinforcing the importance of connecting theory and practice in meaningful ways. Methodologically, this research adopts a qualitative approach, guided by a phenomenological-interpretive perspective, and is developed as an instrumental case study. Data were collected through documentary analysisfocusing on the Pedagogical Course Projectand through structured interviews. The participants included five professors who teach courses with PCC hours, as well as the program’s pedagogical coordinator. The data were examined using content analysis, which allowed for the identification of the category “Conceptions of Practice as a Curricular Component,” along with related subcategories. From the professors’ perspectives, these included teaching practice, instructional procedures, didactics and teacher identity, among others. From the pedagogical coordinator’s perspective, the discussion highlighted aspects such as the relationship between theory and practice and the development of pedagogical maturity. Overall, the way PCC is understood and carried out in the program points to the importance of recognizing pedagogical practice as inseparable from the relationship between theory and practice. This connection is essential in the process of becoming a teacher. In this sense, the thesis supports the idea that PCCwhen grounded in this unityremains a vital component of teacher education, regardless of changes in national curricular guidelines. Finally, it is hoped that the reflections presented here may encourage further dialogue and research on pedagogical practice, reinforcing its central role in the education of teachers who will work in basic education.
